Were these actual jokes before translation?
Russian phrases tend to leave a lot to the imagination. We recently learned that the Russian equivalent to "Kill two birds with one stone" might actually be "To kill two rabbits." The key part about killing them with one shot, or stone seems to be not necessary. I guess that explains why you don't see any rabbits in this part of Siberia. The kids learned the phrase in school and just went out and started killing rabbits two by two (kind of a reverse Noah's ark)
